It happens to the best of us. After months of “being there” for the groom, it has come down to one final duty . . . the best man toast. It can be absolutely terrifying for some, but with a little preparation, you can ensure a smooth speech experience for everyone involved, yourself included!

Staying calm on the big day usually requires some preparation. You can get ready for your best man speech by doing one or more of the following things:

  • Practice ahead of time, in the mirror or in front of a friend.
  • Watch videos of other best man toasts, to get ideas and boost your confidence.
  • Get some help with giving speeches and toasts.
  • Write down the main points and jokes for your best man toast on small cards to keep in your pocket or hand and refer to them as needed.
  • Join Toast Masters and get some practice.
  • Take a public speaking course (hey, this probably won’t be your last time speaking in public!).
  • Have a drink (one, but not two . . . too much alcohol can cause you to give the worst toast in history).
  • Take a deep breath and remember that it will all be over soon.

It’s completely normal for you to get nervous before giving a best man toast. Unless you are regularly speaking in front of other people and giving toasts or speeches at weddings, chances are, you don’t have a lot of experience. If you think this will likely be the first in a long series of best man speeches, then it pays to invest a bit more into learning to chill out and give a great speech . . . you’ll be doing it again, soon!
